Houston’s “Backward” No-tsu-oh Festival: Crawfish Men & Mirth

Young men dressed as crawfish are escorted by others dressed as women during the No-tsu-oh Festival in Houston, Texas on November 11, 1914. At the time this was the largest festival in Houston, with backwardness being a central theme. Even the name No-tsu-oh is simply Houston spelled backwards.

  1. The Festival was celebrated from 1899-1915 and was ended due in large part to World War I. Sadly it was never resumed after the war. Today the name No-tsu-oh is used by a bar in downtown Houston.
