Mariah Carey was a huge star in 1999. That era was probably the peak of her career. It is extremely unlikely that she just happened to be walking around NYC (out and about lol) with a boom box like some debutante.
My daughter was on a trip to NYC in 2001 and was scheduled to go see the TMZ tv show. While there she got chosen from the outside audience to come inside and be part of the show. While inside and waiting her turn to go on Mariah Carey showed up uninvited and unannounced. This flustered Carson Daly but he pressed on. As my daughter was next up for their next scit the staff said just go out there and we will do the skit with Carey. She refused realizing how drugged up and out of it Mariah Carey was that day. I believe it was the next day that Carey checked herself into rehab.
