  1. There was a lot of uncertainty and consternation leading up to this magical performance, due to the ongoing gulf war. And for a brief moment everyone was catapulted into an invigorating, country affirming realm. She was amazing, pre-recorded or not.

  2. I remember watching this live at a Super Bowl party. We were in awe of her performance. People across the country loved it so much that it was released as a CD single afterwards.

  3. Whitney should get her flowers. The greatest female voice that’s ever been and probably the greatest we will have in our lifetime

  4. It is so ironic, and so sad, that the most disenfranchised among us can put such heart into the anthem. That is patriotism at its best.

  6. Canadian here.

Her, Marvin and Chris Stapleton are my 3 faves.

Add in the Buckingham Palace band after 9/11, the version that choir does in the echo-y hotel and when Toronto Maple Leafs fans sung it when the microphone broke for another 3.

  7. I have always said that the National Anthem should be done by Military, Police, Fire or Whitney. Period. All these other people (Fergie, perhaps the worst, or Roseanne, the most disrespectful) are only trying to make a name or statement.

  8. And major shout out to the arranger. The chord substitutions and reharmonizations not commonly heard in the anthem really elevate the emotions this rendition brings to us.

  9. I don’t know that I have ever heard a more powerful vocalist. I watched the Bodyguard in the theater, and when she belts out, “Annnd IIIIII…..” It made me rock back in my chair almost as if the vibration pushed me. She has done that to me a few times.

She will be tough to beat.

  10. My high school played this recording for basketball games when the pep band wasn’t available. Just hearing it takes me back 30 years!
